Nelson wins in OT, Schiller loses in OT at NWCA All-Star Classic

In 2012, the buzz surrounding the NWCA All-Star Classic centered around a super match between NCAA champions David Taylor and Kyle Dake. In 2013, there were a pair of headlining bouts at George Mason University’s Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va., and both involved out-of-weight class matchups.
In all, 14 matches were contested in front of 3,882 spectators at the 48th annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps on Saturday night.The final five bouts of the night were also determined by fan voting.
Iowa’s Tony Ramos defeated Virginia Tech’s Devin Carter 5-3 in sudden victory in a match at 141 pounds, while Logan Stieber defeated Oklahoma’s Kendric Maple 6-4 in the tiebreaker at 149 pounds.
Stieber and Maple provided the fans plenty of exciting scrambles. Stieber took an early lead with a takedown at 1:48 in the first period. After a Maple escape in the first and to start the second, he took the lead on Stieber with a reshot takedown midway through the period. Stieber tied the match with an escape in the third and the two wrestled a scoreless sudden victory period. In the first half of the tiebreakers, Stieber gained control on a reversal on the edge with one second left in the first 30-second frame. Stieber then rode out Maple for the win. He was voted the Oustanding Wrestler for the athletes comprising the red team.
Ramos, ranked No. 1 at 133 pounds, moved up to wrestle the third-ranked Carter at 141 pounds. Carter took an early lead on Ramos in the second period after a scoreless first period. Carter built up over a minute of riding time that Ramos methodically rode away when he started on top in the third period. Ramos picked up a match-tying takedown with 20 seconds remaining and kept Carter on the mat to force sudden victory. Ramos scored the match winner with 20 seconds left to take the bout 6-4.
Six of the ten featured matches on the night went to overtime with two going to the tiebreakers.
At 133 pounds, 10th-ranked Mason Beckman upended Edinboro’s A.J. Schopp with a controlled 5-1 win. For the victory, Beckman was voted the Oustanding Wrestler for the green team. Beckman redshirted last season and was an NCAA qualifier as a true freshman in 2012.
The only bonus points of the night came at 165-pounds where Penn State’s David Taylor beat third-ranked Mike Moreno of Iowa State 13-2. Taylor was rarely challenged and accumulated over three minutes of riding time.
Andrew Howe saw his first action for the Oklahoma Sooners as he used a first-period takedown, a third-period escape and a riding time point to edge Penn State’s Matt Brown 4-3 at 174 pounds. It’s also Howe’s first competition at 174 pounds.
Two-time NCAA heavyweight champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota rode out Mike McMullan of Northwestern on the second half of the first tiebreaker to pick up a 2-1 victory at heavyweight in a rematch of the 2013 Big Ten and NCAA finals.
Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett scored a takedown and three nearfall points out of a scramble in sudden victory to defeat Oklahoma’s Jarrod Patterson 6-1 in sudden victory at 125 pounds
Late fill-in Joey Napoli of Lehigh earned a third-period reversal to edge Boston University’s Nestor Taffor at 157 pounds.
Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock scored a takedown on the edge in sudden victory to beat Boise State’s Jake Swartz at 184 pounds, while Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks countered a cradle in overtime to score a counter takedown and defeat second-ranked Scott Schiller of Minnesota 6-4 at 197 pounds.
In the premliminary bouts, American University’s David Terao beat Ursinus’ Division III All-American Chris Donaldson in an exciting 7-5 match at 125 pounds. George Mason’s Sahid Kargbo rallied from a 3-0 deficit to pin West Chester’s Luke Bilyeu at 5:33.
The United States went 2-0 in freestyle showcase matches as Helen Maroulis earned a technical fall over Venezuela’s Marcia Andrades 8-0 in a women’s freestyle bout at 121 pounds, while Junior World Champion Kyle Snyder teched Canada’s Yiannis Narlidis 10-0 at 211 pounds.
