In order to help the poor student living across India in hostels, the government will provide Rs 15 kg of wheat and rice per month to an estimated 1 crore student. Atleast two-third of the students getting these benefit will be from SC, ST and OBC.
It will cost the exchequer Rs 4,000 crore annually. The move can be seen in the wake of several state elections where political parties are wooing voters from dalit and OBC categories. Announcing this decision, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today said the government will provide grains at BPL rate which is Rs 4.15 per kg for wheat and Rs 5.65 per kg for rice.
