Last Update: 4 January 2011
This is the current crew manifest for the USS Excelsior. The rank insignia will activate a biographical information section (if availible) for each crew member. (Parentheses) around a data line indicates that the information is possible, but not yet definitively established in-game. If you wish to join the crew, "OPEN" positions link to an application form. Please note that EVERY position not on the "Active Player List" is available to applying players; we don't (generally) believe in allowing NPC's to crowd out real flesh-and-blood players, and, if you're good enough, we'll make accomodations to see that you are not under the command of an NPC. Please note that only NPC's considered important (in Excelsior-speak, Tier-2 NPC's or higher) are listed here.
If you would like to apply for a position or department not listed, please ask; the request will be taken under consideration. Bravo Fleet Headquarters has a far more extensive list of possible positions, including many possible specialists' positions; most would be considered acceptable positions on the Excelsior.

The CO is the Captain of the vessel and the final voice in its actions. Outside the game, the CO runs the game - stories, the direction of the game, the web-site and adding new players to the game.
The First Officer, or "X.O.", is the middle ground between the CO and the crew. When the CO gives an order, the XO makes sure it is carried out, or, if the crew has a problem, the XO can present it to the CO. The XO makes sure all stations are operating at peak efficiency, and has an according authority over resource allocation that can supersede that of the Chief of Operations when necessary. If the CO is unavailable or incapacitated, the XO commands. The XO is one of two officers who can jointly
remove the Captain from command. Outside the game, the XO assists the CO with story ideas and the direction of the game. He is also in charge is the CO is away.
The Second Officer is the third in command of the vessel, usually a key officer from a major department, who is capable of running the ship in the event the CO and XO can not. The Second Officer is picked by the CO and not up for application.
Strategic Operations is a specialist field for officers who have a history in tactics. Usually busiest in a time of war, the Strategic Operations Officer is meld of tactical and intelligence with the larger fleet in mind. He gives the CO information on resources deployed in the area and information on the enemy. Outside the game, the StratOps Officer has the unique responsibility of keeping track of events elsewhere in Bravo Fleet, especially on other vessels in Task Force 38.
The Helm Officer controls the flight of the vessel with course, speed and manoeuvres. CONN chiefs are usually accomplished pilots and skilled navigators.
Pilots fly the many auxiliary crafts onboard, including shuttles, runabouts and, on occasion, fighters. They are responsible for the launch, piloting, and safety of these craft, and are therefore usually equipped with some skill in engineering for maintenance purposes. Since auxiliary crafts are sometimes used in combat situations where transporters are ill advised, pilots are also given additional security training, so they can protect their craft while on the ground.
The Ops Officer or Manager is responsible for coordination of the various departmental functions onboard. It is her duty to make sure that the ship runs smoothly and that the allocation of resources like energy or sensors are split between the departments that require them the most for the mission or a particular project. The Operations Officer is aware of all of the primary functions of the ship and can override if it becomes necessary. Many Operations Officers have a background in engineering to aid in the
understanding of vessels and their functions.
The Tactical Officer manages the offensive and defensive aspects of the vessel. Trained in strategies and tactics, they are also versed in other species tactics to anticipate reactions of potential hostile encounters. Typically, the Chief of Tactical and Chief of Security positions are combined.
The Security Officer is the Police Officer of the vessel. An officer's primary goal is to protect the personnel onboard and the ship itself. They are assigned to away teams to protect its members and deployed around the ship in case of intruders. They are also investigators and take the lead in criminal events onboard the vessel.
The Engineering Officer is a specialist in all things technological. They are responsible for the repair and upkeep of the ship's systems, and may be called upon to work with alien technologies. Many Engineering Officers have a further specialization in addition to their broad working knowledge.
The Sciences Officer is skilled in scientific matters. This broad department can encompass many further specialties.
The Medical Officer is responsible for the physical health of the crew. They are skilled scientists apart from being medical doctors and, on starships, generally have additional training in forensic pathology.
The Counsellor onboard deals with the psychological health of the crew.
Marines are trained in combat on a large scale. Where Security are trained in defence of a vessel and its personnel, Marines are also trained in offensive combat. Marines are technically not Starfleet officers and with within their own chain of command, however they do answer to the CO and XO of the vessel they are assigned to, who provide them with assignments.
Marine Pilots are skilled combat pilots and assigned to fly the fighter craft onboard. Skilled in combat manoeuvres, Marine Pilots are trained to provide fighter cover for their mother-ship and in strike missions where starships are unable to function. Being Marines, they are also highly trained in personal combat.
Special Forces are Security or Marine Officers who have specialist training in combat situations. Special Forces are the elite sent into situations where other measures have failed. They have the ability to operate autonomously without support and complete assignments despite high risks.
The Intelligence Officer is an onboard liaison to Starfleet Intelligence and is briefed on the regions situation and the species within. The Intelligence Officer is also a gatherer of intelligence to pass back to Starfleet Intelligence. There are different varieties of Intelligence Officer. Analysts are skilled in the information side of the assignment and usually ready with answers at their fingertips. Field Operatives are usually former Special Forces or Security Officers who are intelligent and have been trained
in information gathering. Each have their own strengths and weakness. NOTE: THIS DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN TERMINATED. LITERALLY. HEH HEH. SERIOUSLY, THOUGH, WE'RE NOT TAKING APPLICANTS. WE'RE ONLY ARRESTING THEM THESE DAYS. --CAPT. DOVAN
Diplomatic personnel can be split into two categories. Ambassadors are high ranking members of the UFP, usually not permanently assigned to vessels but rather brought aboard for specific missions. Diplomatic Officers are assigned to vessels to deal with general protocol issues in diplomatic missions. They are usually skilled communicators and negotiators. Since Diplomatic personnel are usually skilled in UFP and Starfleet laws and regulations, they can also act as legal officers for situations requiring those
abilities.
There are many civilian posts onboard, ranging from family members of crew to specific jobs like Teacher, Lounge Host or Civilian Specialists. Although they have no direct authority over military ranks, civilians are wide spread on most vessels in to 23rd century. Only players with a real interest and drive to write for a civilian character should apply for one of these roles.
